How to Play Disc Golf: A Beginner’s Guide from True North Disc

Disc golf is one of Canada’s fastest-growing sports — and for good reason. It’s affordable, beginner-friendly, and gets you outside. Whether you’re in Brantford, Ontario, or anywhere across the country, you only need one thing to start: a disc. (Okay, three discs if you want the full setup.)

So how does it work? Don’t worry — we’ve got you.

🎯 The Basics of Disc Golf

Think of disc golf like traditional golf — but instead of clubs and balls, you’re throwing flying discs (like Frisbees) into metal baskets. The goal? Complete the course in the fewest throws possible.

Each “hole” has:

  • A tee pad (where you throw from)

  • A fairway (the space to reach the basket)

  • A basket (your target)

🥏 What You Need to Start

  • Driver – For long-distance throws off the tee

  • Midrange – For control and shorter shots

  • Putter – For close-range throws and finishing the hole

📏 How to Play – Step by Step

  1. Tee Off
Start at the tee pad and throw your disc toward the basket.

  2. Continue from Where It Lands
Wherever your disc lands, that’s where your next throw begins.

  3. Reach the Basket
Try to get your disc into the metal basket (chains included!) in as few throws as possible.

  4. Count Your Strokes
Just like golf, each throw counts as one stroke. Fewer strokes = better score.

  5. Repeat for Each Hole
Most courses have 9 or 18 holes. The player with the lowest total score wins.

🧠 Pro Tips for First-Time Players

Use a midrange disc if you’re unsure.
Focus on accuracy, not power.
Let faster players play through — it’s good etiquette.
Bring water, dress for the weather, and have fun.
