How to Play Disc Golf: A Beginner’s Guide from True North Disc
Share
Disc golf is one of Canada’s fastest-growing sports — and for good reason. It’s affordable, beginner-friendly, and gets you outside. Whether you’re in Brantford, Ontario, or anywhere across the country, you only need one thing to start: a disc. (Okay, three discs if you want the full setup.)
So how does it work? Don’t worry — we’ve got you.
🎯 The Basics of Disc Golf
Think of disc golf like traditional golf — but instead of clubs and balls, you’re throwing flying discs (like Frisbees) into metal baskets. The goal? Complete the course in the fewest throws possible.
Each “hole” has:
-
A tee pad (where you throw from)
-
A fairway (the space to reach the basket)
-
A basket (your target)
🥏 What You Need to Start
-
Driver – For long-distance throws off the tee
-
Midrange – For control and shorter shots
-
Putter – For close-range throws and finishing the hole

📏 How to Play – Step by Step
-
Tee Off
Start at the tee pad and throw your disc toward the basket. -
Continue from Where It Lands
Wherever your disc lands, that’s where your next throw begins. -
Reach the Basket
Try to get your disc into the metal basket (chains included!) in as few throws as possible. -
Count Your Strokes
Just like golf, each throw counts as one stroke. Fewer strokes = better score. -
Repeat for Each Hole
Most courses have 9 or 18 holes. The player with the lowest total score wins.
🧠 Pro Tips for First-Time Players
✅ Use a midrange disc if you’re unsure.
✅ Focus on accuracy, not power.
✅ Let faster players play through — it’s good etiquette.
✅ Bring water, dress for the weather, and have fun.
